After a career in the business world, Leonie decided to change direction and pursue her love of painting She initially concentrated on capturing the beauty, tragedy and sometimes humour of Australia’s crumbling outback communities. The feeling for these rural towns was more to do with who had lived there and their stories. These paintings proved to resonate with viewers and a dedicated following was formed.
Painting regularly with other Blue Mountains artists has widened her choice of subject matter and prompted her to explore and experiment with various styles and genres, However, that initial connection to our rural communities remains and still constitutes a significant part of her ongoing work.
A collection of awards has been given over the years, the latest being in 2018 and judges have included Anthony Bond OAM (retired curator AGNSW), Luke Scibberas, Warwick Fuller, David Middleton, David Beschi, Mathew Lynn, Richard Perram (BRAG), Rilka Oakley (BM C.C. curator) and Ruth le Cheminant amongst others and her work has been acquired in national and international private and corporate collections.
Leonie was a founding member of the artists’ collective, Gallery Blackheath in 2001 finally departing in September 2017 to follow, for the time being, an independent path.
