She studied textiles, printmaking, and Sumi-e (Japanese Inkwash painting) as hobbies. While creating woodblock prints, Michiyo was drawn to the Japanese handmade paper for its quality. She was particularly attracted to the effect produced by a combination of the shades of grey and the warm white glow of handmade paper, which can only be achieved from a natural source. To pursue further the effects of grey, she sought to study Sumi-e. During the course of studying Sumi-e, she found the philosophy of this art form much closer to her own personal philosophy.
